this might be splitting hairs question: would it cause posting schedule problems or any kind of problems for the mods if the tuesday texting meme were ever changed back to the format that offered both smut/ship and gen options? is "sexting on tuesday, gen texting on sunday" hard and fast like "tfln on friday" is, or is it more up to the community/poster based on what they want to offer?

thanks for your time!

Not a problem, but I was wondering if the mod team had considered creating tags for at least some of the more popular memes that tend to show up on a regular basis.

Sometimes I specifically want a certain meme and it would be really convenient to have an easy way to check when it was last posted. (Also could make it easier for people to check when a meme was last posted to abide by the rules about frequency of posting.)
thelongcon: (Default)

[personal profile] thelongcon 2016-07-27 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Like general category tags - such as prompt memes or texting memes or ones that are more specific, say insomnia, sexting, tfln?

Because it's a good suggestion - though non-comm members who post entries won't be able to tag their posts themselves. And not everyone choose to use the tags that are available to the comm.

That doesn't mean we can't add them in after the fact.

please discuss with the meme poster of the smutty picture prompt meme the last few weeks to wait a bit longer to post it. they're tossing it up before the meme round up, which makes it list as a saturday posting and not every timezone is sunday at the time of the post. it's scheduled for sunday and they're jumping the gun. all they have to do is wait a few more hours.

same day. this is going to have to be a one or the other type thing. i get the midnight texting meme is scheduled for a once a month thing, but can it be a once a month thing as long as the other meme isn't one meme down from it? this is just overkill

Posted only several hours apart.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

While both memes are hurt/comfort memes, people do have preference to keep the smutty version separate from the non-smutty versions, and so they're considered two different memes. (ETA: I'll let it stay up for now - this doesn't mean it won't get deleted later.)

However, posting so closely after the more generic version went up is pushing things rather closely, and I'll contact them to space it out when they post for the next time. If it's a pattern that keeps up - it will be further addressed.

I've also contacted the poster to avoid similar situations in the future.

There's already a hurt/comfort meme that isn't specifically gen or ship/smut

Can we quit acting like we need 10000 of the same meme because the one posted a few hours ago is missing a single option?

I gave it a couple hours to see how things went, and I'm going to delete the second meme. It can be reposted on another day.

Thanks for your patience.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-02 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
is there any criteria for the timing of super-specific kink/smut memes or romance memes? because a lot of these seem to overlap; a general post will go up and then within a couple days there are 6 memes of single kinks/tropes that could have easily been covered in the general ones.
thelongcon: (Default)

[personal profile] thelongcon 2016-09-02 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No there isn't. So far, niche/very specific memes can be posted as long as they don't go against the once/week or first two pages rule of similar memes - the similar part becomes the judgement call.

There is definitely merit in giving more specific ideas for people to play in since broader memes may be harder to find people who will enjoy the same ideas/kinks another player does, (which depends on the listed preferences either in top comments or elsewhere) But also having a lot of memes come up just for those specific ideas/kinks also isn't the best solution, as in this case when a lot of them come up. And though there may only be about 7 new memes a day, it can feel like a lot when, especially when they occur in a row. People will post what they want to play, even when it doesn't get much of a response from the rest of the community.

Speaking for myself, I can't think of a concrete way to address that would address the issues and have bakerstreet remain an open comm. (The last time moderated posting was tried, it did not go well). Everything will have to be taken on a case-by-case basis, so by all means, please bring it up when you notice something. It may take some time for things to be resolved.

Of course, if for example there's something like a general courting meme posted, followed soon after memes like a medieval courting meme, an underwater courting meme, and an extreme courting meme, that would definitely be taking things too far.

I'm not entirely sure this is a great compromise, since the reverse smut prompt meme isn't a meme that people like to play in as much as the smut prompt meme. tbh, I don't think the reverse smut prompt meme should be weekly as it's been attempting to be. It's just not something that's as popular as the regular picture prompt meme, and this is something that's been brought up before. If you make it a first come/first served meme, you're going to run into someone trying to throw up the memes earlier in earlier in an attempt to 'beat' the other one.

IMO, the reverse meme should be a monthly thing. It rarely gets a full page of top levels (usually even half a page) and the smut meme clearly gets much more than that. I get that to some people 'they're the same', but they're really not. One limits the prompts someone can/does put up and switches the onus of starting, unlike the regular picture prompt, which is one of the few memes that actually switches which party does the starting in comparison to most memes, where the tagger in does the starting.

I know this can be seen as nitpicking, but when you enjoy playing in one meme and don't want to play in the other at all, finding out that you might not get to play in your preferred meme that week because posting them has now become a competition isn't fair. the sunday smutty picture prompt meme has become a thing. it's something we look forward to every week. it has a schedule. for all that it's a picture prompt meme, the reverse one is not the same meme. please go back and see for yourself the activity in one versus the other. this feels like either a weird attempt to make the reverse meme a thing, or like everything has to be part of something else. it's okay to have things separate. but if you or the other players are getting overwhelmed by a smut picture prompt meme, don't try to make it a coin flip between a popular meme and a not popular one. make the reverse meme a monthly mid-week, which is about when it's been posted. it's certainly more fair than co-opting a meme slot that's actively used for something that isn't.

Re: http://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/3618704.html

[personal profile] thelongcon 2016-09-04 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for your feedback.

The mods are aware of the difference in activity levels in the two memes, since this has been something that's been brought up before - either as the number of picture-related prompt memes posted at the time, or more directly. It's also rather unfair that all other picture prompt memes have to be posted on one day in the week - which may also need to establish some kind of rotational schedule. The posting earlier to prevent the other memes from being posted situation is one that may be cropping up there.

Having it on a longer schedule can be something that we look into too, and since mid-month is about two weeks from now - there will be time to chance things. A quick check to when the reverse meme was first posted (Feb 2014, also when a lot of other reverse memes were popping up) - it did fall more along a monthly/biweekly timeline and had more comments than it gets now, and slowly got posted more and more often.

Another solution I had offered included combining both the reverse and regular smut memes into one - allowing players to choose whether or not to leave prompts in their own top comments - and to allow others to tag in with their own prompts.

If other people want to chip in their opinion, feel free to do so.

Do we really need a generic smutty scenario meme when there are a host of smut memes on the first two pages that cover the majority of prompts given?

Re: http://bakerstreet.dreamwidth.org/3628802.html?mode=reply

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
it's basically another version of the smutty random scenario meme. which hasn't been up in a while. it also covers prompts that haven't been covered and tbh, that particular meme being up would be a godsend as opposed to ten other memes.

it also doesn't break rules, isn't a repeat meme, and isn't posted often (i've seen it posted before).

post a gen meme and simmer down.

They similarly themed memes but are presented very differently. Like I get that maybe it's not your cuppa, but they aren't the same thing. I'll talk to the one that isn't the usually scheduled meme and see if the'd be willing to post it further away from the sexting meme in the future.

i know someone's going to bring up that the midnight texting meme got posted when the sunday gen meme already got posted, but i'd like to point out that the midnight texting meme is scheduled for the 'second or third week', and as this is the third week, the gen texting meme should have held off on posting to let the midnight one get in. they either need to not post on the second week or not post on the third, but i think this is something you need to discuss with the posters, because overlap like this happens since it's not like meme posters actually talk to each other.

the midnight texting meme posted once a month, as they're allowed. the sunday gen jumped the gun and didn't keep track of the weeks. tbh, i think you should make the midnight one the third week as a solid post date so this 'one or the other' doesn't happen.
thelongcon: (Default)

[personal profile] thelongcon 2016-09-19 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hello, thanks for bringing this to our attention. Scheduling has been an issue that's come up a lot lately and I will get in contact with both posters of the texting memes in question to work out a better method going forwards. This isn't the first time the two memes have come up together, and having a set date for the midnight meme definitely will prevent this from happening again in the future.

As for today - I'm going to follow the previous precedent, and leave both up for now - but also bring it up in the main comm too so people are aware of whats going on.

Seconded. Let's not pretend treating gay men as a self-esteem-boosting accessory for straight women isn't anything other than gross, dehumanizing, and cringe-worthy. Dressing it up like a cute, tongue-in-cheek meme is, as said, completely tasteless.

i'm going to make another complaint about the smutty picture prompt being posted too early. 9:05 by pst time. 11:05 by theirs. i get it. they're probably still paranoid about the reverse smut picture prompt 'taking their spot'.

so maybe clear it up with that poster or w/e that they don't need to jump the gun so damn early. i'd also appreciate if you guys would clarify whether the reverse prompt meme is going to still be vying for that spot, because i don't think it should, which might make this poster calm down a little. they'd gone back to waiting to post it until the reverse pic meme was discussed as being able to contend for the spot. now they're posting it way too early. clarify, please, and then discuss with them, because if it's vying for the spot, they're posting it too early on purpose, and if it's not, there's no need to post it so early. it's the sunday smut meme. not the saturday night one, which it's been for a while now.

sa

(Anonymous) 2016-10-02 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
the same can be said for the 'sunday' gen text. it's fucking saturday night. no one is going to steal your meme. this is getting ridiculous. considering the gen text's early jumping and how they jumped it so that the midnight text meme now has to be given a specific day because they shot their load too early again...

it's just unnecessary when there's already established days for them.
